I can’t believe I’m writing this article so early, but maybe that’s a symptom of the challenges we’ve all faced this year. Either way, I was recently chatting with someone who mentioned they’re waiting until the New Year to start looking for another job as they didn’t see their current role meeting their needs for 2025. Fair enough then, but I asked them “What would waiting until 2025 achieve that acting now wouldn’t?” and helped them realise their reasons weren’t actually that convincing.
So, if you’re already thinking that 2025 is the right time for change then here are 5 reasons not to wait and to start your job search right now.
1. Focus on your break not your escape
We’re blessed to have Summer coincide with Christmas and New Year, so free your schedule and enjoy the beating the kids at batdown rather than beating the increased competition come January.
2. Beat the January rush
The “New Year, New Me” mentality is ever present, especially after a challenging year. As people find time over the break to break out their CV, we see an increase in applications to roles, so right now you can stand out as one in 5 applicants rather than one of 50 come January. So, while everyone else is blowing dust off their CV, you can focus instead on blowing the dust off your yorker.
3. Better summer networking
Summer offers a boon of networking opportunities with end of year functions, family gatherings, or just a good old BBQ. This year you can spend the time building momentum for your new role. Plus, you can yarn about the unfairness of the auto-wicky rather than the difficulties of the job market.
4. The New Year is a natural bookend
A resignation a few weeks into the New Year creates a messy handover for you and your employer. Luckily the New Year creates a tidy way to finish up your work, see off your workmates and you’re ready for your next over innings come January.
5. Get ahead of your New Year’s resolutions
If you’re already thinking your current job isn’t cutting it, then get ahead of it and by the time the New Year rolls around you’ll be marking off your resolutions as soon as you start. Of course, you can expect any such claims to be reviewed by the Third Umpire, but such is the state of the modern game.
If you’re already thinking that 2025 will be time for a change, don’t wait until everyone else has the same idea. Starting your job search now means less competition, faster responses, and the chance to enjoy your summer without the stress of job hunting hanging over your head. Plus, you might be surprised at how many doors can open during the festive season when people are more relaxed and willing to help. So, update that CV, brush up on your LinkedIn profile, and start searching—you might just secure your dream role before the New Year even begins!
